UWF football freshman Gael Laurent wins the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week Award for his performance against West Georgia.

PENSACOLA — For the second time in three weeks, the West Florida football team has the conference’s best freshman.

Monday, the Gulf South Conference tabbed UWF linebacker Gael Laurent as the conference Freshman of the Week following his performance in a 30-2 victory against West Georgia. A 6-foot-2, 215-pound redshirt freshman from Miami, Laurent piled up seven tackles, three sacks, three-and-a-half tackles for loss and two forced fumbles, leading a defense that limited the Wolves to just 2.2 yards per carry.

Through six games, Laurent is tied for the conference lead with three forced fumbles, ranks second overall in sacks (6) and has 28 total tackles.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Reed also represented the Argos as GSC Freshman of the Week after UWF’s 48-3 victory against Delta State earlier this month. Reed threw for 262 yards on 15-of-24 with four touchdowns.

UWF (5-1 overall, 4-0 Gulf South Conference) returns to action at noon Saturday in Melbourne against Florida Tech (3-4, 1-3). The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as the GSC Game of the Week, as well as ESPN Pensacola 99.1 FM.
