GRAY – The H.L. Bourgeois volleyball team opened the Lady Braves Classic Thursday afternoon with one of its easiest wins in the nearly 40-year history of the tournament.

H.L. Bourgeois’ service game completely throttled De La Salle in a 25-3, 25-7 sweep victory.

Kirsten McGuire guided Bourgeois with six kills and two blocks, followed by Abby Theriot with seven kills and four digs; Kelsie Stegall with 19 assists, four digs and three aces; Mackenzie Vordick with eight digs and three aces, and Jya Walker with two blocks.

“We served outstanding. We served them off the court,” Lady Braves head coach Peter Verret said. “They could never get anything going offensively. When they got a ball aback over, our offense put in down.”

“I don’t even consider that a game. We didn’t compete,” said Lady Cavaliers head coach Melissa Grubbs. “I wish I had an answer. My team didn’t show up to play.”

Tied at 2, H.L. Bourgeois (6-1) scored 23 of the final 24 points of the first set. The Lady Braves scored 14 unanswered as De La Salle (3-3) had difficulty returning Stegall’s serve over the net. Then Bourgeois closed the set with nine straight points, powered by three aces by Vordick and a pair of McGuire blocks.

HLB jumped out of Set 2 with six straight points behind two Emily Burgess kills and an ace by McGuire. Then they ended the set on a 16-2 run driven by numerous De La Salle hitting errors, while McGuire and Burgess belted several kills each.

“I’m happy with the defense,” Verret noted. “You put all this effort into this tournament, you hope that your team can produce. They started off well. Let’s see what happens now.”

“Our passing was terrible. Pass the ball and maybe you can make things happen,” Grubbs explained. “My team is very young. We’re ninth and tenth graders. We’re just trying to get as much paying experience as we can right now.”

The tournament continues with pool play on Saturday morning. The semifinals are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and the championship match at 3:30 p.m.

“It’s important that they get to hit the court. We’ve worked so long and so hard,” Verret said. “You want to secure the fundamentals and get yourself in place to get better with each match as the season goes on. Hopefully, we peak at the right time. Those are our goals.”

SOUTH LAFOURCHE 2, BERWICK 0

Also at the Lady Braves Classic, South Lafourche (2-4) used 12 aces to overwhelm Berwick (1-3) for a 25-17, 25-17 victory.

Claire Chiasson headed South Lafourche with seven kills, eight aces, five blocks and four assists. Alissa Cosse added 40 digs, five digs and two aces; Bailey Melancon had 11 digs, five assists and two aces, and Liza Derosia had nine blocks and nine digs.

Ryleigh Arnold led Berwick with four blocks and an ace, while Ella Hover had three kills.

“They did a good job communicating and moving the ball,” said Lady Tarpons coach Chandler Guidroz. “We played a lot cleaner game then we had been playing. We eliminated a lot of the mistakes we were making.”

“We have a lot to work on,” said Lady Panthers head coach Megan Fegenbush. “We have a lot of young girls who playing in positions they’re not used to being in. So we’re going to focus and get better as a team.”
