Well this is the week!

The boys of fall are ready to get back under those Friday night lights for some high school football.

The high school football regular season starts on Thursday, and I know area sports fans are ready to see some hard-hitting action.

With the season upon us, it’s time to make some final predictions. Here are my predictions involving how all of the districts with local teams will fare.

I know the state power points system has taken some of the luster from winning district championships, but it is still an important goal for area teams and fans when it comes to bragging rights purposes.

Please keep in mind that all of these are just predictions. Don’t get too excited or too disappointed about these picks. It’s still early in the football year, but I’m sure the regular season will bring plenty of unexpected finishes and surprises as always.

If you are a player, coach or fan reading this column and you don’t agree with your team’s prediction, feel free to use this column for motivation going forward.

I encourage everyone to make your own predictions and share them with me on Twitter @courierchris.

Predicted champion: East St. John

Runner-up: Destrehan

Rest of the standings (in order of finish): Terrebonne, Hahnville, Thibodaux, Central Lafourche and H.L. Bourgeois.

Thoughts: This district is called the “SEC West” of Class 5A football for a reason. I expect these teams to beat each other up all season. East St. John has looked impressive with wins over Karr in the fall scrimmage and West St. John at the River Parish jamboree. Destrehan returns major talent that will keep it near the top of district. Terrebonne has playmakers all over the field to have another successful season, but it will have to replace some major pieces on the offensive line and at linebacker from last year. You could also expect Hahnville, Thibodaux, Central Lafourche and H.L. Bourgeois to field much improved teams this season.

Predicted champion: Assumption

Runner-up: South Terrebonne

Rest of the standings (in order of finish): South Lafourche, Vandebilt Catholic, Ellender and Morgan City.

Thoughts: The Mustangs have the most talent and experience returning of any other team in this district. I think South Terrebonne will shock some people this season, and South Lafourche will give every team a fight every night.

Predicted champion: St. James

Runner-up: E.D. White Catholic

Rest of the standings (in order of finish): Lutcher, Donaldsonville, Patterson, Berwick

Thoughts: This district will be very entertaining. St. James is my pick to win it if they can stay healthy and overcome a tough nondistrict slate. E.D. White and Lutcher will always have well-coached teams capable of beating anyone on any given night. I think it will come down to St. James at E.D. White Catholic in Week 10 on Nov. 8.

Predicted champion: Catholic-New Iberia

Runner-up: Ascension Episcopal

Rest of the standings (in order of finish): Franklin, Jeanerette, West St. Mary, Houma Christian School, Delcambre

Thoughts: This is a whole new world for Houma Christian due to the the LHSAA’s reclassification. It is the Warriors’ first time playing in 2A and they will take on some competitive programs in Catholic-New Iberia, Ascension Episcopal and Franklin. Catholic-New Iberia lost in the Division III state finals last year, and Ascension Episcopal advanced to the Division III quarters. Franklin made it to the Class 2A quarters as a No. 23-seed last year.

Predicted champion: Vermilion Catholic

Runner-up: Central Catholic

Rest of the standings (in order of finish): Covenant Christian Academy, Highland Baptist, Hanson Memorial, Centerville

Thoughts: CCA will battle some new district foes this season, including a state championship contender in Vermilion Catholic. Central Catholic has several explosive playmakers to challenge the Lions as well.
