The Eugene Challengers pulled away after the first inning of the second game of Wednesday's American Legion baseball doubleheader with the Grants Pass Nuggets to earn a split of the twinbill at Swede Johnson Stadium.
The Challengers (5-5 in league play) took the nightcap 10-3 after losing the opener 11-5.
In the nightcap, Eugene gave up two unearned runs in the top of the first inning, but bounced back for two runs in the bottom half to tie it. The Challengers scored twice in the third to take a 4-2 lead and blew things open with a six-run sixth inning.
Prestin White, Charlie Updegrave and Peyton Bracy each had two hits for the Challengers in the second game. Updegrave scored twice and drove in two run runs, White had a double and Bracy had two runs and an RBI.
Damian Carreon Iboa went 6 2/3 innings on the mound to earn the win. He scattered seven hits, struck out five and gave up two unearned runs.
In the opener, the Challengers led 5-2 after four innings but gave up three runs in each of the next three innings to fall.
Mason Crowson and Kellar Edwards had two hits apiece for Eugene in the opener. Edwards had two RBIs and a run, and Crowson also scored.
Titans swept by Medford Mustangs
SPRINGFIELD — The Willamette Valley Titans were swept by the Medford Mustangs in an American Legion league home doubleheader Wednesday, falling 5-1 and 12-11 at Hamlin Sports Complex.
In the nightcap, the Titans (12-15, 5-5 league) trailed 12-9 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Willamette Valley scored twice to pull within 12-11 and had the tying run on base but was unable to get closer.
Trevor Duran was 3-for-4 in the nightcap for Eugene, Bryce Boettcher was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Trey Nelson was 2-for-3 and Tristan Vidal was 2-for-5.
In the opener, Dillon Edwards, Cade Crisp and Chase Elliott were each 1-for-3 with Elliott accounting for the lone Titans RBI. Walker Wonham went the distance on the mound, allowing five hits, striking out five and walking one.
