METAIRIE – As it was in the series opener, the sixth inning proved pivotal as the New Orleans Baby Cakes topped the Fresno Grizzlies 4-1 on Thursday.
After Fresno struck first in the top of the sixth, New Orleans quickly responded with four runs over the next two innings.
Three runs came in the bottom of the sixth, which propelled the Baby Cakes to their first lead of the game. Scott Van Slyke hit a two-run double and Rafael Ortega added an RBI single for a 3-1 lead.
The Baby Cakes took advantage of a Fresno error to score their final run of the game in the seventh inning.
Odrisamer Despaigne picked up his first win of the season allowing one run on three hits over 2 2/3 innings. Javy Guerra picked up his first save of the season after the last two innings and retired six of seven batters faced with three strikeouts.
In his second Triple-A start and first in New Orleans, Jarlin Garcia limited the Grizzlies to three hits over 4 1/3 scoreless innings. He also recorded four strikeouts and allowed one walk.
Magneuris Sierra, Austin Dean and Tomas Telis recorded two hits each for the Baby Cakes.
