UPCOMING AREA EVENTS

Monday-May 28. The Houma Christian School Basketball Academy will continue on Monday. The academy will have eight sessions during the month of May at Houma Christian. It will be held two nights a week (Monday and Tuesday) for four weeks. It will be for boys and girls from ages 7 through 18. There will be two separate groups for beginners and advanced players. The beginners group will start at 5:30 p.m. each day and an advance group will begin at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $140 per month. The academy is the first of its kind in the Bayou Region. It will be held year round with eight sessions each month. The academy will be hosted by Houma Christian girls’ basketball coach Kathy Luke and former Houma Christian/University of New Orleans basketball player Nate Frye. The academy is to teach kids the fundamental of the game while improving their skill, knowledge and interest in basketball. Interested campers should reserve spots ahead of time. May 28: The Prime Time Fitness Gym of Houma will start its football summer camp on May 28. The camp is for ages 10-14. It will be held at the Prime Time Fitness Gym located at 213 North Hollywood Road (Suite B) in Houma. The cost is $100 a week with lunch included. There will be early drop-offs and late pick-ups. It will be a summer long camp geared towards helping young athletes gain knowledge of the game. They will also learn how to properly evaluate film, gain knowledge on how to properly train and prepare their bodies for the season and receive tips on reaching proper nutrition goals. June 4: The Nicholls State University women’s soccer team will host its 2018 Youth Day Camp beginning June 4 for boys and girls between the ages 5-14. The three-hour training sessions will commence at 9 a.m. and last through June 8 at the Nicholls Soccer Complex. Players will learn both offensive and defensive fundamental soccer skills during this camp that will be led by Nicholls head coach Mac McBride and members of the Colonels women’s soccer team. Sessions will focus on the responsibilities of each position, technique and tactics. Attendees will be encouraged to fall in love with the game by being introduced to a variety of fun contests. June 4-6. The Vandebilt Catholic softball program will host camps this summer at Gerald Albert Park at Margaret Johnson Field on the campus of the Houma school. On June 4 and June 5, there will be an offense and defense camp for players for fourth-seventh grades from 9 a.m. to noon. On June 6, there will be a pitching clinic from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The price is $60 for the two-day camp (June 4-5) and $80 for all three days (pitching clinic included) or $40 for just the pitching clinic. The deadline to register is May 25. A $15 late fee will apply to walk-up signees (8:30 a.m. daily). The camp will be directed by the Lady Terriers coaching staff and players and will feature special guests James Spearman and Margaret Johnson. June 4-8, 11-15, 20-24 and 25-29: The Hoop-LA basketball camp, which is led by Houma Christian School coach Freddie Frye, will take place on June 4-8 for ages 7-9, June 11-15 for ages 10-13 and June 20-24 and June 25-29 for ages 14-17. The camp times are 10 a.m. to noon each day and will be held at Houma Christian's gym, 109 Valhi Blvd. in Houma and the cost is $75 per player. Early registration will be held on Saturday, May 12, May 19 and May 26 at Houma Christian's gym. Registration is also allowed on the Monday before a participant's camp week. June 4-7.  Houma Christian School girls basketball coach Kathy Luke will host a Hoop-It-Up girls’ basketball summer camp on June 4-7 at Lisa Park Gym in Houma. The times of the camp are 9-11 a.m. each day. The gym will open at 8:30 a.m. for parents who need to get to work.The camp is for girls in grades third through eight. The cost is $65 and will include free snacks and drinks. Checks are asked to be made payable to Kathy Luke. Campers will get a chance to learn and improve their basketball fundamentals and skills.
