CLASS 2A BOYS TRACK & FIELD OUTLOOK

JUMPS

Pole Vault: Bandon's Hunter Hutton won last year at 14-6 and has gone 14-0 this year. Three others have cleared 12-0.

Long jump: Monroe's Zach Young, sixth last year, has the best mark at 21-1, narrowly ahead of Waldport's Addison Stephensen and Vernonia's Clay Sullivan.

Triple Jump: Stephensen (42-9) and Sullivan (42-3¾) are the only jumpers over 42 feet.

High jump: East Linn Christian's Ben Johnson has gone 6-1. Five others have a PR of 6-0.

THROWS

Shot put: Defending state champ Cristian Garcia of Monroe has thrown 52-1½. Crow's Ramon Dunn (49-11) and Heppner's Derek Howard (49-2) are the main threats.

Discus: Monroe's team chances took a big hit when Garcia (144-5) didn't compete in the event at district, leaving Neah-Kah-Nie's Tristan Bennett (137-0) the favorite.

Javelin: St. Paul's Alex Dela Cerda (170-9) has the best throw in a wide-open event.

SPRINTS

100: Weston-McEwen's Jacob Speed (11.28) is a slight favorite over Butte Falls' Isaac Tiry (11.33) and Monroe's Dylan Lynn (11.42).

200: Speed, third last year, is a big favorite with his 23.03 PR this year year.

400: Speed, second last year, is a big favorite again at 51.43. Only Columbia Christian's Isiah Mariscal (51.95) is within a second of Speed.

MIDDLE DISTANCE/DISTANCE

800: The race is between Bandon's Josh Snyder (1:59.94), second last year, and Monroe's Young (2:01.23), fourth last year.

1,500: Bandon's Hutton and Snyder went 1-2 last year and should again this year.

3,000: Hutton was fifth last year but ran 8:35.15 against mostly 6A and 5A runners at the Centennial Invitational, giving him almost 40 seconds on the field.

HURDLES

110 highs: Vernonia's Sullivan won easily last year but has run only 15.77 this year, just ahead of East Linn Christian's Christian Wilson (15.81).

300 intermediates: Sullivan, second last year, has almost 1½ seconds on the field this year.

RELAYS

4x100: Weston-McEwen returns its entire team after placing third last year. The TigerScots (45.01) and Columbia Christian (45.08) are the class of the field.

4x400: Heppner ran 3:36.60 at the Centennial Invitational, giving the Mustangs more than two seconds on Delphian, Columbia Christian and Enterprise.

TEAM OUTLOOK

Weston-McEwen won last year over Bandon, but it's Bandon vs. Monroe this year. Heppner and Vernonia are darkhorses.
