SOUTHSIDE — It was quite the home and Class 6A, Area 13 opener for Southside on Tuesday.
The Panthers started out a bit slow offensively, then caught fire on the way to a 10-0, five-inning win over Pell City.
Southside went down in order in the first inning, then left the bases loaded in the second. The Panthers took advantage with runners in scoring position in the final three innings, though.
Southside brought home four runs in the third inning. Emilee Coker and Lauren Hunt each scored on errors. Then Kaylee Brown and Chloe Gattis each had back-to-back RBI singles.
In the fourth, Sydney Yancey’s two-RBI double and Rylee Gattis’ RBI single extended Southside’s lead to 7-0.
The Panthers put the game to rest with a three-run fifth inning. Hunt had an RBI single to get for the first run before Julia Hurley scored on an error. Rylee Gattis ended the game with a bases-loaded single to plate Coker.
Star of the Night
On top of her three hits, two RBI and one stolen base, Rylee Gattis went the distance in circle for the Panthers. The eighth-grader gave up just two hits, walked none and struck out seven.
“She worked ahead of hitters the whole game. … If she can stay ahead of hitters, she can be tough to beat.” — Southside coach Kyle Routon
Play of the Game
Southside already had a 4-0 lead, but Yancey’s two-run double in the fourth showed Southside was firing on all cylinders at the plate after the slow start.

They Said It

“We’ve kind of struggled closing games (Southside has lost its three games by one run). It was finally good to have a complete win. Because even a couple of our wins haven’t been pretty. That was the first time we’ve put everything together, really.” — Routon
