The Niceville Eagles pounded out multiple hits to defeat the Fort Walton Beach Vikings 19-7 in varsity baseball action Monday night at Daniel Bohannon Field.
Connecting for four hits each for the Eagles were Nic Nolan and Rece Hinds. Connor Walsh, Dawson Marshall and Nathan Lloyd each had two.
“We battled and scrapped to stay in it,” said Fort Walton Beach Coach Brian McDaniel. “We had the right guys up to bat with multiple runners in scoring position all night. Just didn’t get that big hit we needed to put some pressure on them.”
However, the Eagles did get the hits.
“They got the big hit … several of them. They have a great offensive lineup,” McDaniel said. “If you walk nine, don’t get ahead in the count, and don’t get your secondary pitches over … that lineup will put a lot of run on the board.”
Fort Walton Beach hung with the Eagles the first four innings.
Both teams scored two in the first and then Niceville put up four in the second.
Fort Walton answered with one in the second and one in the third.
In the fourth, Niceville added two more on three hits. Nolan doubled and scored on a triple by Hinds. Walsh singled to score Hinds for an 8-4 game.
Fort Walton Beach fought back in the bottom half putting up three runs, all unearned, for an 8-7 game.
In the top of the fifth, Niceville scored one on a walk to Chance Huff who later scored on a double to right by Nolan.
The Vikings had a chance in the bottom half, but failed to answer. After loading the bases on walks and hit batters, they couldn’t get a runner across the plate.
In the top of the sixth, Niceville put the game away. The Eagles combined seven hits with five walks to put up 10 runs. Trent Walker doubled for two RBIs and Hinds blasted a triple to right center for three RBIs. Niceville led 19-7.
In the bottom half, Fort Walton went down on three strikeouts.
Up next for Fort Walton Beach is a 6 p.m. game Thursday at Choctawhatchee. Niceville will play at 7 p.m. Thursday at home against Starkville, Mississippi.
