Behind a monumental performance from Lauren Brewer, Southside cruised past Oxford 10-0 in girls high school soccer Tuesday.

Brewer finished the day with seven goals in leading the way in a dominant victory for the Panthers. Caroline Prince, Hallie Kate Smith and Graysn Carter each scored one goal, while Smith also had four assists and Prince recorded one assist. Emma Gallagher and Blaise Bunton each contributed one assist.


Westbrook 8, JB Pennington 2

BLOUNTSVILLE — Westbrook Christian eased past JB Pennington 8-2 in girls high school soccer Tuesday.

Kylee Berndt was the star for the Warriors in the win, as she recorded four goals and one assist. Mary Reid Goodwin finished with two goals and one assist. Hilary Tran had one goal and one assist. Avery Bane scored one goal. Makenna Beard notched three assists. Kendall Sharp tallied one assist.



Southside 2, Oxford 2 (3-1 PK)

SOUTHSIDE — Southside made three penalty kicks to Oxford’s one after the game was tied at 2 after regulation to win in boys high school soccer Tuesday.

Logan Shelnutt finished with two goals for the Panthers (6-5-1, 1-0) in the area opener. Carlos Herrera had one assist. Jaren Greene made a number of big stops and finished with 14 saves in goal, and he also stopped three penalty shots, to help secure the victory.



Etowah 12, Fort Payne 0

FORT PAYNE — Etowah rolled past Fort Payne 12-0 in high school baseball Tuesday.

Austin Watts fanned 10 and gave up just two hits in getting the win on the mound for the Blue Devils (9-3).

Bryson Bone’s two doubles and three RBI led Etowah at the plate. Wilson Farmer and Zack Jones each had two hits and two RBI. Jarren Wright collected two hits. Will Hotalen drove a double and plated two runs. Austin Young hit a double. Will Noles and John Cade Robertson each chipped in one hit.

The Devils return home Thursday at 4:30 p.m. to host the Wildcats.



Etowah 186, Douglas 200

Etowah defeated Douglas in boys high school golf Tuesday at Twin Bridges Golf Club.

The Blue Devils carded a 186 to the Eagles' 200.

Catanzaro finishes tied for 10th

ATHENS, Ga. — Former Westbrook Christian and current University of Georgia golfer John Hilliard Catanzaro finished tied for 10th at the Southern Intercollegiate tournament that ran Sunday and Monday at the Athens Country Club.

A true freshman, Catanzaro finished the event at 1 over, four shots back of first place. He shot 73 in Sunday’s first round and 72 Monday for a two-day total of 145. Arkansas teammates Alvaro Ortiz and Luis Garza tied for first with a total score of 141 each.

Catanzaro was tied with teammate Zach Healy for tenth, while fellow Georgia golfer Spencer Ralston was tied for sixth, one shot lower than Catanzaro and Healy. The trio helped the Bulldogs finish tied for second in the team rankings with Kennesaw State and just behind the Razorbacks.
