The world watched the members of the soccer team trapped deep in a dangerous cave in Thailand. People sacrificed, prayed, risked and hoped for them to be rescued. We parents held our breath hoping these children survive.

Meanwhile, the world watches the authorities in the United States push thousands of children into a cave of confinement and despair, separated from their parents after surviving a harrowing ordeal fleeing dangerous circumstances. Some are babies. All are helpless. I was raised in a country that rescues, not one that persecutes and traumatizes. My heart is in agony over the anguish of those children and their parents. I am in shame that this is happening in our land.

I’m astounded these authorities thought we were too shallow and heartless to notice or care. My spirits are lifted by the countless Americans who strive to intercede, help and restore families ripped apart. I couldn’t get up in the morning if it were not for the multitudes of kind and faithful Americans who embrace the ideals we were built upon. To them I say: Thank you. You are the foundation of the United States. You are our ideals. You are our courage.
