Re: Editorial, June 25, “County should leave concerts to those in the know”
The gist of the article was the county mismanaged an event that lost $56K, therefore the county should outsource the process. No, the county should abandon the process — successful or not.
Let the hotels, motels, condos, bars and restaurants in the area fund these events. Not only are they the direct beneficiaries, their money would be at risk. They would have a powerful incentive to ensure a successful event.
The source of the funding was the TDC bed tax and, yes, the entire area benefits from the good work done by the TDC, but this was a chance for them to leverage their funds. The TDC’s involvement should have been limited to low-cost or no-cost promotional activities with perhaps a small one-time contribution to kick-start the concert activity.
The TDC placed $82K at risk and rented a venue from itself (they manage the convention center). That is not good stewardship of public funds.
