A propane gas truck exploded in Port Dixie in early April 1978, sending a wall of flame in two directions and forcing the evacuation of a 30-block area. About 1,000 people were forced from their homes. No one was killed in the blast but five firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and burns. The tank truck carrying the gas was demolished, as were three nearby mobile homes. Two stationary storage tanks, located close to the blast, were also enveloped in flames.
