The birdies were there for Eddie Lee. But so were the double bogeys.

The Fort Walton Beach sophomore opened Tuesday’s 2A state tournament with an up-and-down, 6-over 78 at Mission Inn & Resort and heads into the final round tied for 22nd.

Lee, fresh off a 74 at districts and a 73 at regionals, parred the opening par-5 on El Campeon before a birdie on No. 2 got things rolling.

A bogey on 3 and double on 4, though, halted the momentum en route to a front-side 38, and then he opened the back nine with a double on 10. At 6-over with five holes to play, Lee birdied 14 and 16 to get it back to 4-over before a double on 18 closed out a back-side 40 and a 78.

On the day Lee finished with three birdies, three doubles, three bogeys and the rest pars and is five back of the lead, shared by Ponte Vedra’s Justin Ortiguera, Archbishop McCarthy’s Kade Cannon and American Heritage’s Leo Herrera III.
