Foul play is not suspected in the death of a 70-year-old Illinois man who fell out of a boat Monday in Pointe-aux-Chenes, authorities said.
Deputies were called out to a medical emergency around 12:33 p.m. on the 4200 block of La. 665 after receiving reports that a man had fallen into the water near Bayou Pointe-aux-Chenes, the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies learned that Johnny Martin, of Pekin, Ill., had been a passenger on a small aluminum hull boat.
The boat stopped at a dock and the two occupants were attempting to offload a 50-quart ice chest containing fish they had caught earlier that day, authorities said.
Witnesses told deputies that the vessel drifted away from the dock and both Martin and the ice chest fell into the water, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Martin, who had come to Louisiana for a fishing trip, also struck his head during the fall, authorities said.
Rescuers pulled Martin from the water and began administering CPR, authorities said. Members of the Montegut Fire Department responded to the scene before deputies arrived.
Although toxicology results are pending, investigators don't suspect foul play and believe Martin died from natural causes, authorities said.
