A West Thibodaux Middle School student was charged Tuesday after bringing two BB guns to school, authorities said.

The unidentified 12-year-old boy had two replica BB pistols in his possession and had shot at several students at a bus stop Tuesday morning, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office said. A deputy later found the student near the portable buildings at the school and recovered one of the guns on the ground under a portable building.

The student was carrying the other BB pistol in his waistband, authorities said. The boy was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon on school property.

Sheriff Craig Webre warned that some BB guns look like actual firearms.

“All guns, including BB guns, are strictly prohibited on school grounds,” Webre said. “Not only are BB guns dangerous, but law enforcement officers will most often not have the time or ability to distinguish a replica pistol from an actual firearm and will treat the situation as though there is a real firearm present. It’s imperative that any gun of this nature be easily distinguishable from a real firearm.”

The boy was released into the custody of his mother, authorities said.
