The Panama City Police Department has unveiled a new mobile app to send out alerts in real time or get tips from residents.

PANAMA CITY — Getting live updates from Panama City police or providing officers with crime tips is now just a few clicks away.

The Panama City Police Department recently launched a new mobile app for iPhone and Android smartphones. The department also unveiled a system for residents and police to interact through text messaging. With both methods, the public can share anonymous tips with police and officers can respond back, creating real-time, two-way conversation.

The app, called Panama City PD, is free to download on both iPhone and Android smartphones. Through it, users can send messages and photos to police officers. But just as important, police can quickly send messages to users, said Detective Kristain Shaw with the Panama City Police.

"It gives us the ability to push real information in real-time to citizens," Shaw said. "With the app, citizens can get information at the same time it is released to the media."

The texting system allows for similar anonymous conversation with police.

Residents can share information anonymously with police by simply texting PCPDTIP and their message to 847411 (tip411).

Still, Shaw recommends residents download and use the app if possible since it is quicker and more efficient.

Shaw said the police department has been working on the new app for about six months.

"We received some information on it from some bigger police departments using it and liking it," Shaw said of the app system.

Shaw said there’s practically no limit to the kind of information police can provide residents, including about crimes in progress in their neighborhoods.

"We can put out alerts about burglaries going on in an area … we can put out the description of a suspect’s vehicle," Shaw said. "This is going to improve public access to the department and make communicating with the public more efficient and quicker than in the past."

Those with questions, or who need help signing up for alerts, downloading the
