Attalla police arrested at suspect who returned to the scene of the crime and charged him with burglary and theft, according to Chief Dennis Walker.

Chief Investigator Doug Jordan said a burglary was reported Sept. 4 at a house that was vacant while being renovated in Attalla. Someone broke in and took a number of tools, including a paint sprayer from the residence.

Jordan said after the break-in, the property owner put surveillance cameras up at the home and captured the alleged burglar returning to the residence.

When Attalla investigators saw the recording they recognized the suspect as David Wayne Valdez, 35, of the Littleton community.

“He was known to us around Attalla,” Jordan said. The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division also had shared security camera images of a man spotted in the old Gallant Road area going on residential property without authorization and were able to identify Valdez as the man on camera.

Jordan said Valdez helped investigators retrieve some of the property stolen from the house, including the paint sprayer and several hand tools.

Valdez remains in the Etowah County Detention Center, charged with first-degree theft and third-degree burglary, on $25,000 bond.
