Michael Conner, 53, had driven a friend to work early Thursday morning and was heading home when his vehicle struck a school bus on Alabama Highway 69 South.

He didn’t survive the crash, which was at the intersection of Canterbury Road and less than a mile from his home. Conner’s daughter, Brooks Scott, said she wasn’t surprised to learn he was on his way home from doing a good deed.

“He was a great guy,” said Scott, 27. “He would help anybody who needed help.”

Conner is survived by another daughter, 7. Scott said a lot of his friends called him by his nickname, “Maine.”

“He was quiet-natured, but friendly. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and fixing things related to carpentry and plumbing,” she said. “He was sweet, thoughtful and loving.”

Scott said her father touched a lot of people and will be missed by many.

No children on the Tuscaloosa City Schools bus were injured in the crash.
