The deadline is Oct. 31 to apply to be part of Leadership Etowah’s Class of 2020.

Leadership Etowah is a program of The Chamber of Gadsden & Etowah County that brings together 10 participants for 10 one-day retreats — a series of issues-oriented forums to give them a broader understanding of the complexities in this diverse community.

“Leadership Etowah is a personal development program designed to motivate participants to develop and enhance leadership skills through an educational process that addresses pertinent community needs,” Chamber President Heather New said.

Classes are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and class dates are Jan. 21, Feb. 18, March 17, April 21, plus two additional days for an overnight trip to Montgomery to visit the legislative session, May 19, June 16, Aug. 18, Sept. 15, Oct. 20, Nov. 17 and Dec. 1 graduation.

Sessions include nonprofits and social services, workforce development, education, government, health care, economic development, public safety, tourism and arts and culture.

Criteria for participants includes a demonstrated desire to serve the community; willingness to seek leadership roles on public and private boards, volunteer organizations or in public office; motivation to improve skill sets; potential for advancement to leadership positions in their own organizations; an occupation unlikely to require relocating from Etowah County in the immediate future; commitment to continue for at least a year with the program; and a letter of recommendation or support from their employer.

The cost is $500 per participant for Chamber members; $600 for non-members.
