Tommy Gunns was at home when a young boy showed up asking about his air conditioner. The child told Gunns that we was living had no air conditioning. Gunns posted about the encounter on Facebook. With the help of his friends, Gunns raised enough money to buy an air conditioner unit for the boy and installed it himself.
CRESTVIEW — When 12-year old Dalton Carpenter stopped to talk to a stranger about an old air conditioning unit, he had no idea what would happen next.
Dalton was walking down the street when he passed by Tommy Gunns’ home. Sitting on the porch was a broken air conditioning unit. Dalton asked if he could have it, but was told it was no longer working.
“I asked what was up and he said ‘I don’t have any air conditioning or heat and I was hoping that one worked,' ” Gunns said. “I was like, 'Man, this poor kid doesn’t have any air conditioning.' So I asked some friends for help.”
Gunns posted about his encounter with Dalton on Facebook to ask for someone to help find a unit for the child. Within 15 minutes, Gunns had raised $300 to buy Carpenter a new window air conditioner.
“I used to be super poor, but now I am doing pretty good, and anytime I can help someone I try to help them,” Gunns said of his decision to help Dalton. “I’ve had a lot of people help me over the years.”
Gunns’ generosity didn’t stop at buying an air conditioner. The next day, he and a friend went to where Dalton lives with his uncle to install it. Dalton’s uncle, Danny Davis, had no idea what his nephew had done.
“I was surprised. It caught me off guard,” Davis said. “He (Tommy) said he has a soft heart for kids and knew Dalton needed an a/c, so he went and got him one.”
Gunns said it was very hot in the house. By the time they had finished installing the unit in Dalton's room, they were drenched in sweat.
Davis was stunned by the generosity.
“It made me feel really good and appreciative,” he said. “It built my hope back up on humanity and showed me that there is still kind people out there.”
So what does Dalton think of the new air conditioner?
“I love it!”
