A funeral will be held Sunday for a former state legislator from Northport.

Earl Mitchell, who served in the Alabama Legislature from 1978-86, died Aug. 26 at West Alabama Hospice in Tuscaloosa. He was 77.

Mitchell was the retired manager of Sunset Funeral Home, where he worked for 57 years. He represented House District 89, which included parts of Pickens and Tuscaloosa counties, during his tenure in the Alabama House of Representatives and served on the House Ways and Means Committee.

Before his election to the Legislature, he served four years as Tuscaloosa County's coroner.

In 2013, he was named one of Northport's Citizens of the Year. Organizers of the award said he was cited for the compassion he showed in his profession along with his work with community organizations. Among the groups Mitchell helped were the Jaycees, local schools, Warrior baseball at Kentuck Park, Black Warrior Boy Scouts, the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama and Five Points Baptist Church.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Saturday at Five Points Baptist Church in Northport.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Five Points Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Gray and Rev. Paul Wilson officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Sunset Memorial Park with Sunset Funeral Home directing.

He is survived by his wife Kaye Eidson Mitchell; daughter, Renae Mitchell Wilson; and sons Reginald Earl Mitchell II and Mike Eidson.
