A 59-year-old Montegut man who struck another man with a truck over the weekend has been charged with attempted murder, police said.

In addition to attempted second-degree murder, Ronald Coffman, of South Louisiana Avenue, is charged with a hit-and-run, Houma Police said.

The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Friday in the 8000 block of Park Avenue, police said. Investigators learned Coffman had been talking to another man, who told him he was banned from the property.

Coffman, who was driving a pickup truck, began to drive away from the area but made a sudden turn toward the victim and accelerated until he purposely struck him, police said. After hitting the victim with the truck, the suspect struck another vehicle parked in the lot and left the area toward an unknown direction.

The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries, police said.

Police learned later in the investigation that Terrebonne Parish sheriff’s deputies found Coffman at a home in Gibson. The suspect was unconscious and needed serious medical attention, Police Chief Dana Coleman said.

As Coffman was being treated at a local hospital, police obtained warrants for his arrest, Coleman said. After the suspect was discharged from the hospital Tuesday, he was taken into custody and booked into the Terrebonne Parish jail.

Coffman’s bond was set at $75,000.
