Q: Can you tell me where to locate a pre-emergent with the active ingredients Atazine or Isoxaben? My yard is full of burweed. Also, will these products be hazardous to my dog?
A: I have found that Atrazine Weed Killer is sold at Walmart, and a product called Crossbow that contains Isoxaben is available at Home Depot. Both chemicals pose a hazard to animals. After applying weed killer and pre-emergence products, keep animals away while the products remain wet.
Q: My plum tree is overgrown. When is the best time to prune the tree?
A: Plum trees should be pruned in spring or summer, on a dry day. Do not prune in wet weather, because wet weather causes silver leaf disease.
Q: I have several Encore azaleas. They bloom more than once each year. When is the proper time to prune them?
A: Encore azaleas need very little pruning and they do not require deadheading to bloom again during the year. If your Encore azaleas do need a bit of pruning, cut them back in the spring as soon as the spring flowering cycle ceases. They will set buds again for an encore blooming cycle.
Q: My blueberry bushes are really overgrown. Can I prune them now?
A: You may remove any dead, damaged or diseased wood at any time of year, but blueberry bushes should be pruned in late winter or early spring.
