Cheers – Voice of the Wetlands
The annual event is back for its 15th year, and it runs through Sunday night at the Ponderosa Fairgrounds, 5403 W. Park Ave., just outside of Houma.
“This year we are excited to bring you the best in Cajun cuisine, Louisiana crafts, music, art and good times all wrapped in our special atmosphere,” festival organizers said. “Come fall in love with the wetlands, and you too will see how special they are.”
This festival truly combines some of what is best about south Louisiana. It certainly includes all the food and music you would want to enjoy. But it also places an emphasis on the wetlands, one of the reasons this place is so special.
Tab Benoit, a blues musician from Houma, is president of the organization and performs at the festival each year.

Cheers – Louisiana Gumbo Festival of Chackbay
If you happen to be closer to north Lafourche, or if you want to divide your time between two great annual traditions, check out the Chackbay Gumbo Festival.
You will be glad you did.
It is always a favorite, and with the temperatures beginning to feel a bit like fall, a festival built around gumbo just seems like the right thing to do.
This is the festival’s 47th year, and organizers are hoping it’s the best one yet.
“We’re hoping for another good year. We have some good entertainment lined up this year both locally and nationally,” said Chief Josh Falgoust with the Chackbay Volunteer Fire Department, which organizes the festival and benefits from it as a fundraiser.
The highlight will be country singer Jason Michael Carroll, who takes the stage at 10 tonight.
The fun continues Sunday with the parade and fair.
See you there.
