I worked for 25 years at a local roofing manufacturer and we were always working to be more efficient while improving quality and service. Many initiatives were used. I also worked four years with the county.

Give all the new city and county tax revenue created by the Supreme Court decision on internet purchases back to the people. Our governments have been operating fine without this. The new law means increased taxes on the people.

We had a 12.5 percent tax increase when we went from an 8- to 9-percent sales tax some years back. By the way we were told that increase would be temporary.

It looks like there will be a cost-of-living raise for all city employees, plus an additional boost for all by way of classification upgrades. Cost-of-living raises are necessary. Any other raise should be on a case-by-case basis by merit. Do a complete study on the wage/benefit package of each job and see how each compares to the private sector, then make adjustments as needed. Local governments are flush with benefits. City employees should not get more than the private sector in their total package.

Put the Park and Recreation Authority on a lean budget. How did its spending get out of control?

Keep the firefighters’ system like it is without adding staff to facilitate more training unless there is a good payback.

The new money has generated more spending in the city budget. No, to using new money from the people; rather, return it to them.
