A 19-year-old Houma man was arrested Wednesday after being caught stealing from a vehicle, police said.

Wilontray Hester, of Mary Ann Street, is charged with simple burglary and resisting an officer, the Houma Police Department said.

Shortly after 9 a.m. police were called out to the 200 block of Ray Drive to investigate a burglary in progress. While responding, police said they found Hester rummaging through a vehicle and took him into custody without incident.

Hester initially gave police a fake name, but his real identity was discovered after he was transported to the Terrebonne Parish jail, authorities said. Witnesses and the victim told investigators the suspect had no reason to be in the vehicle.

Hester was booked into the jail to await a bond hearing.
