Holy Spirit Catholic School
• During the summer break, Maddie Mitchell, a ninth-grade student at Holy Spirit High School in Tuscaloosa, illustrated and published a children’s book written by her mother and Holy Spirit employee Laurie Mitchell. The book, "A Zebra Has Stripes," includes whimsical drawings that introduce children to animals in alphabetical order through rhyming pages while reasoning through some unusual (and some not so unusual) things about animals. The book is now up and running on Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble online.
• First-graders at Holy Spirit Elementary School are learning about hydroponics in the classroom and comparing the growth to the herbs grown in the patio garden and greenhouse. Some summer harvesting had to be done, including shelling dried peas for sustainability, at Jeremiah's Garden (the community garden at Catholic Social Services across from the school in Tuscaloosa). The kids are planning to have pizzas made using the fresh herbs that they grow.
