FORT WALTON BEACH — A man was arrested on several charges after being caught shoplifting at a grocery store and fighting the officer trying to arrest him.
The man was being held in a Publix loss prevention office when the officer arrived. A manager showed the officer a receipt of all the things the 33-year-old man had taken without paying for, according to his Fort Walton Beach Police Department arrest report. The man refused to give the officer his name.
The officer placed the man in handcuffs and started walking him to the patrol car, but he pulled away and kicked at officers who were trying to pat him down. He had to be “taken to the ground,” according to the report, at which time he sustained injuries to his face.
The officers took him to the hospital for the injuries, and while in the wheelchair, the man grabbed the officer’s hand and squeezed it, causing him pain.
The officer noted the man appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance.
He was arrested and charged with retail theft, battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence.
