FORT WALTON BEACH — Mail service was reinstated to about 10 homes in Fort Walton Beach after a dog accused of attacking mail carriers was moved to a new home in Virginia.

Saki, a one-year-old female German Shepherd, was adopted Thursday by a police officer in Virginia.

The dog became the focus of controversy when U.S. Postal Service officials stopped mail delivery at some Bay Drive homes, saying the animal was hostile to mail carriers.

Before being adopted, Saki was removed Thursday from her home at 39 Bay Drive SE by the Panhandle Animal Welfare Society.

The father of the dog’s owner had said postal officials overreacted.
