FORT WALTON BEACH — A man was arrested after accelerating toward a law enforcement officer who was trying to get him to stop following a separate traffic accident.

Officers with the Fort Walton Beach Police Department were attempting to shut down a westbound lane of U.S. highway 98 while they investigated a traffic crash at the foot of the Brooks Bridge on Feb. 11, according to an arrest report. While a police officer was standing on the sidewalk, the 25-year-old man from Fort Walton Beach was traveling in the westbound lane at a high rate of speed and nearly hit the officer. He applied his brakes and came to a rest just prior to striking her patrol car blocking the inside lane.

Officers then ordered him to stop his vehicle several times. The man looked at the officers and then continued to flee. A second officer drew his weapon, walked into the lane of travel the man was driving in and ordered him to stop, but the man instead accelerated his vehicle towards the officer. The officer “was forced to jump out of the way of the vehicle.”

The man was eventually detained and arrested for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, a felony.
