Rouses Markets is selling a healthy serving of new Eat Right Good-to-Go meals in its deli section.

The more than 20 new items are portioned and made with quality ingredients that cater to specific dietary goals or allergies, the Thibodaux-based grocery store chain says.

Each item is color coded for a dietary goal -- orange for low sodium, green for dairy-free, yellow for high protein, red for no sugar added and blue for low calorie.

Rouses’ registered dietitian Esther Ellis said the new offerings were inspired by customers wanting healthier options for meals on the go.

She said it’s also important for consumers to have healthy options readily available.

All meals are based on a set criteria. They must be less than 600 calories with under 6 grams of saturated fat. They have no more than 725 milligrams of sodium, over 10 grams of protein (except for soups and salads) and less than 5 grams of added sugar. They also are a good source of fiber or have a serving of whole grains.

Rouses says it has more than 500 Eat Right grocery items throughout the store. They range from quick snack packs to soups such as tomato basil or vegetable medley. Rouses has also put a healthy twist on southern favorites such as red beans and rice made with brown rice and turkey sausage or shrimp and grits made with cauliflower.

“I encourage customers to try new items, and they might be surprised that things they don’t traditionally like they end up liking,” Ellis said.

The items are available at most Rouses locations, Ellis said. Find the nearest store online at www.rouses.com.
