I am sick of watching the insensitive louts infesting our local coffee shops who think a table is free for the taking to sit for hours, drumming on their MacBooks. Recently, I observed one particularly obnoxious boor who didn't order anything, but sat like a solitary king cradling his laptop with a perpetual sneer that said loud and clear: "Just dare to ask me to leave!"
This abusive behavior wouldn't be tolerated in restaurants, but it has become the name of the game at coffee shops, which, after all, are social environments. I now favor coffee shop owners and managers hiding or eliminating plug sockets, disconnecting routers, and ditching desk-style seating. Historically, coffee shops were places that fostered lively conversations. As a romantic, I would like to return to those bygone days.
