I am writing in response to Richard Doughty’s letter, published Jan. 26, regarding Mark Mayfield’s columns. In it, Doughty says that he sometimes agrees with George Will and sometimes not, and he sees that as an indication a columnist is doing a good job. He also states he hasn’t found anyone who agrees with Mayfield. I would say that I have a similar reaction when I read Will. However, I would also say the same about Mayfield’s columns. Sometimes I think they hit the mark and other times are overstated. I’m amazed, actually, that Mayfield writes what he does in this conservative environment. I find that I often have to keep my thoughts to myself.

The most important thing, however, is that our editorial page includes writers with a range of viewpoints. Further, it seems to me the local daily editorial attempts to be balanced. It’s nice to read things on the editorial page with which I agree, but I don’t expect to agree with everything I read there. It’s also nice to read things that make me think or look at things in a different way. I appreciate The Tuscaloosa News for its efforts to reach community members with different points of view.
