Northport Fire Rescue is getting in the Christmas spirit this month with a couple of holiday-themed events.

Chief Bart Marshall said the festivities will begin Saturday, when Santa Claus will board a Northport Fire Rescue ladder truck and ride through neighborhoods in Northport to talk with families and children.

Marshall said Truck 22 plans to go through the neighborhoods of West Circle, Clear Creek, Harper Creek, Vestavia and Northwood Lake, but he said interested residents should follow the Northport Fire Rescue page on Facebook for live updates on where Santa will stop.

The truck is scheduled to start making the rounds at 2 p.m. Saturday and will announce its presence in each neighborhood by sounding its sirens.

“We really hope to make this an annual thing, but this year we’re just trying it out and testing the waters,” Marshall said. “It’s another great way for the fire department to do community outreach and to promote fire safety while we’re at it and to embrace the Christmas spirit.”

The following Sunday, Dec. 17, the fire department will host an open house in Station 2 at 5500 U.S. Highway 69 North.

Santa will also attend that event, where children can meet St. Nick, deliver their wish lists and have pictures made. Marshall said light refreshments including hot chocolate and candy canes will be available. Marshall asked that families bring their own cameras if they want to take photos.

The open house will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday and last until 5.

The fire department is also planning to burn a Christmas tree later this month during a demonstration emphasizing fire safety, but that event is still being planned, Marshall said.
