The Bayou Country Sports Park should have its five softball fields finished by next spring.
According to Gary Beeson, chairman of the Recreation District No. 2-3 board, the dugouts for the five softball fields have been completed and work to install the lights, bathrooms, concession area, walkways and netting for the girls' softball fields is about to begin.
"We've got engineers on this and were getting this done," Beeson said. "We got some more money in and we've budgeted that money to finish the girls' softball complex. It's around $1.8 million we've got toward the project."
With the parish also matching another $200,000 that the recreation district put up to build parking lots for the soccer and softball fields, Beeson expects the fields should start seeing play immediately after they are opened in April.
At Wednesday's Terrebonne Parish Council meeting, Parish President Gordy Dove asked Rec District 2-3 to put more of the $3.97 million it has in current assets toward finishing the softball fields. Dove said Friday that he met with Beeson and was happy to see the recreation district was already working to get it finished.
"I'm glad things are finally moving forward and we will soon be able to open the soccer and girls' baseball fields," Dove said. "These guys have done a good job with Rec 2-3. I don't have a problem with them. The only problem I had was that I found out they had $4 million in the bank. That's the people's money and we need to finish that sportsplex."
According to Dove, the Soccer Association has also agreed to put forward $150,000 in money and services to finish the soccer fields at the sports park. The boys fields are scheduled to be finished by November, but the common area, concession, restrooms and concrete walkways haven't been scheduled yet.
Dove said once they get the sports fields up and running, other parts of the park, like splash pads and tennis courts, can be added.
